Monday morning Gloria made reservations for Alice at her restaurant on the Riverwalk. Alice arrived early for lunch, taking time to go through the kitchen and chat with employees. The manager seemed relaxed and undisturbed by her presence, which Alice found refreshing.
Christine was on time dressed in dark blue slacks, a light blue silk blouse, and a matching jacket. “We haven’t done this in a while,” Christine said. “It’s nice to see you in the daylight. What’s the occasion?”
Alice folded her hands on the table. “I’ve been wanting to talk to you about Ricky.”
Christine gave her a long, interested look, her eyes drifting to the top of Alice’s fawn-colored blouse. “Trouble in paradise?”
The waiter brought their drinks and took their orders for lunch. Alice squeezed the lime into her iced tea and stirred vigorously. “You and I are friends, Christine,” she started, “and I’d like for us to stay that way, but if you ever talk to Ricky the way you did the other night, I’ll never speak to you again.” She noticed a definite droop at the corner of Christine’s mouth.
Christine set her glass down and stared at Alice in total disbelief. “Aren’t you overreacting a little?”
“I don’t think so,” Alice said. “What has Ricky ever done to you? What the hell’s your problem?”
“I couldn’t even begin to explain.” Christine picked up her glass and then nervously patted her already perfect hair. “She’s not right for you, Alice. Everyone but you can see it.”
“Who do you think you are?”
“I can’t believe you,” Christine roared. “She’s making a fool out of you! She travels with three men. Three long haired, doped-up men. How can you live with someone like that?”
It seemed strange hearing Joe, Stan, and Kyle referred to as men. They were the boys. She’s talking about the boys!
“You know absolutely nothing about her,” Alice said, trying to keep her voice calm. “You’re judging her by what her band looks like, and you know nothing about them either. You treat her like a gigolo, when she makes more money than you do! I don’t understand any of this. I’ve never known you to be so relentless.”
Christine’s jaw was set, acknowledging a rage that Alice had only seen a few times. “It’s no secret that I’m in love with you, Alice,” she said through clenched teeth. “Seeing you with that blonde piece of fluff is almost more than I can bear.”
“Oh, puhleeze,” Alice said. “You’ve never been in love a day in your life!”
“Ask anyone who knows me!” Christine spoke with such self-assurance that Alice had to look away from her. “I remember the first day I saw you. It was the most marvelous day of my life. I’ve wanted you for years, and you chose her over me. How can you expect me to be civil under those circumstances?”
Alice was mortified. She felt confused. Insensitive. We’re friends, for crissake, she reminded herself. We’ve been friends for years!
“She’s not right for you,” Christine continued. “You’re both from different worlds.”
Their food arrived, but neither acknowledged its existence.
